Where to Eat
Restaurants in British Columbia are in a unique and enviable position when it comes to sourcing food. Ideal growing and farming conditions, coupled with abundant natural resources allow for chefs across the province to easily source regional and seasonal goods. This includes the endless bounty of orchard fruit; earthy wild vegetables like morel mushrooms, asparagus and fiddleheads; wild game like venison, quail and duck; fresh local cheeses; seafood and fish such as salmon, oysters and spot prawns.
B.C. is the ideal place to practice the 100-mile diet, as so much is easily and naturally produced within that radius just about anywhere in the province. And a lot of it is organic and sustainable.
So whether you decide to splurge on a five-star restaurant, patronize a quaint mom and pop café or pack a picnic basket for a scenic lunch overlooking a vineyard, you can bet you'll eat well and fell good about it too.
B.C.'s restaurants also pay homage to its wines in a way unsurpassed by other wine- producing regions. Just about every establishment you visit will have a solid selection of local wines and display them proudly.
The same is true at winery restaurants. While the selection will mostly be limited to their own products, the advantage here is two-fold. First all, the menu is typically built around the wines, showcasing them to their best advantage. Many of the dishes will be infused with the same wine that has been recommended to pair with them - thereby creating the ideal match. Secondly, many winery restaurants have picturesque settings with unstoppable views of mountains, lakes or vineyards.
While you are permitted to bring your own wine to restaurants, the fine dining rooms in B.C. will often have an exclusive selection of rare local products you might not be able to find anywhere else.
Always ask about the special - typically it will feature the freshest, in-season ingredients and represents good value. Instead of opting for a litre of the house wine - which often has the greatest mark-up - check out the by-the-glass selections of premium wines. You might drink less, but you'll enjoy it more. If you order a bottle of wine, but don't finish it - ask the server to re-cork it and take it with you!
